New Business Challenge 2019: Study trip to the Netherlands

After weeks of student and company selection, the New Business Challenge 2019 has taken off and the study trip in the Netherlands is in full swing! Participating companies this year include Allianz Insurance Company Ltd, Farmerline, Solidaridad, TempoHousing and Closing the Loop for which 20 Ghanaian and 20 Dutch students and recent graduates have been selected to work on their respective business cases.

On Friday 5th July, 2019, 20 Ghanaian selected participants traveled to the Netherlands to meet with their Dutch teammates for the first time and get to know the Netherlands. Over the weekend, they visited places in the Hague such Zaanse Schans, delving deep into the rich Dutch culture.

On Monday the study trip NL was officially opened by Mr. André van Ommeren (RvO- Member of the Board International Programmes) with the first Keynote address from Mr. M.H Idris (Embassy of the Republic of Ghana in The Hague - Minister/Deputy Head of Mission). The second Keynote address was by Ms. Rosalind Boschloo (RvO- PSD coach Ghana, SL, Lib, and Tanzania) as the group visited the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) in The Hague for some insights on how Ghana & the Netherlands are growing together. The teams also started to work on their business cases with a workshop ‘problem analysis’.

Visiting the companies in the Netherlands was also a vital aspect of the study trip. The students as teams visited their respective companies, gained more insight into the company business case and got the opportunity to experience the different levels of implementation in comparison with the implementation in Ghana. The NBC participants got to know much more about their business cases, this time from the perspective of the Dutch company representatives. The teams came prepared with many questions and left with many answers, fueling their solution for their business cases!

Amidst all these visits, the teams have been participating in various workshops such as 'Basics of Business'. In this workshop, the coaches Jemila Wumpini Abdulai from and Samuel Waterberg from People's Pension Trust shared their experiences as entrepreneurs. The coaches challenged the teams to apply those basics of business to strengthen the business case they are currently working on.

This year, the teams have also been sharing their experiences and fun time out through their exciting daily vlogs. Catch up on the journey on Facebook (New Business Challenge Ghana)

The NBC Ghana is a unique student business case competition where 20 Dutch and 20 Ghanaian students and recent graduates work together for 3 months in mixed teams on actual business cases from 5 participating companies. This challenge is all about discovering new opportunities for the private sector and maximizing the entrepreneurial potential of the participants.
