Report on past  Orange Ride, Cycle Down Carbon Event

On Saturday 10th July, 2021, the Royal Netherlands embassy together with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, organized an exciting cycling event, “The Orange Ride, Cycle Down Carbon”.

The event brought together representatives from various cycling groups in Accra along with many cycling enthusiasts who cycled through principal streets of Accra to create awareness on cycling as an alternative means of transport.

In attendance was Hon. Mohammed Adjei Sowah, the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Mavis Nkansah Boadu, the Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, H. E. Mr. Ron Strikker, the Netherlands Ambassador and Ms Katja Lasseur, the Deputy Head of Mission. Also joining virtually was Mr. Marcel Kleizen, the Cycle Mayor of Den Haag.

Through this event, the embassy brought together the relevant stakeholders in the cycling space, to learn, share and exchange ideas on making cycling a more prominent means of cycling within the city of Accra and to kickstart the conversation on the needed policies and infrastructure.

The Mayor of Accra in his speech, hinted at plans by the Assembly to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the City’s roads infrastructure to develop alternative means of transport. Cycling reduces the emission of carbons harmful to the climate, is cost effective and contributes to  a healthy life.

The Embassy  thanked its partners, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly for the support given, Go City Cycle Share and Tour, the event planner, Decathlon Ghana, the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Ambulance Service for ensuring the safety and security of all cyclists along the routes and to all cycling enthusiasts who joined the Embassy to dot the streets of Accra Orange on two wheels.
