Visit to GNBCC Member Royal Smilde Foods in the Netherlands

As part of ongoing efforts to engage with GNBCC members and deepen our understanding of their contributions to the Ghana-Netherlands business relationship, Jemima Rockson, project manager and head of Diaspora Desk for GNBCC recently had the opportunity to visit the Royal Smilde factory in Heerenveen, the Netherlands on September 23rd. During the visit, she was warmly welcomed by Brigitte Bos from Royal Smilde Foods and her colleague .This visit not only gave a closer look at one of the key players in the Dutch food manufacturing industry but also provided valuable insights into their operations and longstanding connection to Africa, particularly Ghana.

Established in 1863, holding the prestigious title of Dutch Royal Warrant since 1988, Royal Smilde has grown into a family-owned, international company with over 700 employees and seven production facilities across the Netherlands. Smilde Foods continues to be a leader in the food manufacturing sector, exporting and distributing more than 1,800 products in over 47 countries. Royal Smilde has been the largest Dutch margarine exporter to the African continent for over 40 years.

The factory tour showcased how Royal Smilde’s various products are produced, including their well-known margarine, butter, mayonnaise, and cooking oils. From raw material sourcing to packaging, each stage of production is a blend of precision, sustainability, and innovation. The factory utilizes state-of-the-art equipment to ensure consistent quality across its wide product range, while also maintaining eco-friendly practices that reflect their commitment to sustainability.

This visit reaffirmed the strong trade links between the Netherlands and Ghana, especially through Royal Smilde’s significant exports to the African market. We were happy to visit their impressive facilities and gain deeper insights into their operations.
